We planted zuccini, yellow crooked neck squash, bush beans, beets, spring onions, carrots, red and green bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, basil, thyme, rosemary, parsley, sage and dill. That may be a bit ambitious for our first garden experience ever, but the sqaure foot garden method is set up so that you can plant a lot in a little space. We have also used this book about Container Gardening and it has been really helpful. I'm still not sure what I am doing most of the time--am I watering enough? too much? trying to pick out bugs and thin seedlings--we'll see how much harvest we reap!
Our house is a rental, and while it suits us really well, the worst feature about the house is the yard. It's pretty small and barren. We've laid some sod and there are pretty rose bushes. We've also been doing some planting trying to make it look nicer. We planted creeping fig, to hopefully hide the ugly cinder block walls. And tried to fill in between the roses with cuphea or Mexican Heather (funny sidenote--at the nursery when I asked the Hispanic employee if the Heather was hardy he replied "Of course, it's Mexican" and laughed) and some ivy geraniums. Also, the slimy little snail in the photo with the heather has met his death. I just figured out that snails are garden pests after one ate an entire leaf on our bush beans in minutes! Kate and I have been going out on "snail hunts" at 6:30 am and I haven't seen one in a few days.
And of course we've got our garden help. This girl LOVES being outside. Paul says she's going to be our "earthy nature girl" because she bolts for the door as soon as it opens to get out and would spend all day out there if I let her. Thankfully she's started walking so she won't keep ruining her pants crawling around on them! We love Spring.
