Happy Halloween

We had a lot of fun celebrating Halloween. My mom was staying with us all week (unfortunately we had to say goodbye to her the morning of Halloween) and we worked on getting kate excited for Halloween by taking lots of walks to look at pumpkins and witches, going to the pumpkin patch and reading Halloween books. I think Kate really got it! She loved holding her pumpkin basket and putting her candy in it. She wasn't shy about trick or treating and loved having so many suckers. I think she's had enough for the rest of the year!
Festivities included a hayride at the park the on Halloween eve. A parade and trick or treating at Yale. And a pizza party and trick or treating with friends. The lady bug costume happily got another years worth of wear and I'm guessing that it will come out again next year on baby sister!

weekend in NYC

lucky me. Mom came to visit and we spent last weekend in Manhattan. Paul stayed with Kate in Connecticut while we crammed as much as possible into the two short days we had alone. Not wanting to miss out on all the fun, they met us for our last night in the city. We put Kate to bed, got a babysitter and went out on the town. It was a great weekend and we had fun visiting our favorite places. The only thing that would have made it better was if Dad could have made it!

six things I'm enjoying today:

1. My new wool socks found on clearance for $3, keeping my toes nice and toasty.
2 The library. One of the greatest inventions of all humankind. You get to borrow books for free. I've always loved the library but I appreciate it so much more now that I am not a student and have children! I also love library sales. I found a collector's edition book for $1! This weekend I'm reading this and this.

3. The opportunity to attend an emergency preparedness class this morning. We've been slacking on this and it was just what I needed to get in gear. We're stocking up and getting prepared.
4. A new project. Hopefully this will turn into something great for our family this holiday season. I'm excited at the prospect and will be sure to share when it's complete. It involves sequins, corduroy, ricrac, velvet and lots of red.
5. A constant reminder that baby sister is coming. Both by her kicks and the growing belly. I wonder how much longer I'll be able to wear those pants? (probably not much)

6. Liz's gorgeous photography. She took our family pictures earlier this year, but check out her recent photo shoot. Don't the photographs look like paintings? Liz, I think you should open a gallery.

new 'do

In many ways Kate is a "girly-girl". She loves dresses, shoes, purses, playing with her dolly and stroller. She pays attention to jewelry and likes to give hugs. In other ways she is not so much. She is not afraid at the playground, she will try anything. She usually doesn't cry when she falls and if she does, you know it hurt. And she hates having her hair done. It's a battle to comb her hair after her bath each night. When I try to put a ponytail in she'll flail and kick and scream even with the best distraction. Barettes and clips usually last less than 5 minutes before she's discovered them and pulled them out. I really want to put bows in her hair but she hates it, so I usually don't. That results in a messy head most days and me feeling like a bad mother because my child doesn't look put together. So it was time for another haircut. When it's cut in a cute bob I don't feel so bad about not "doing" anything with it. It's a win-win.
